Common Aluminum Alloys and their applications in the automotive industry

1000 Series

These alloys has 99% Aluminum. This alloy has high thermal and electrical conductivity, good corrosion resistance, and excellent workability properties.

Used on exposed trim, decorative plates 

1200:

Condenser Tubing and Fins

2000 Series

This major element alloyed to form this series is Copper. Once heat-treated the properties are similar to mild steel. Artificial ageing is commonly used to increase strength. 

2008, 2010:

Body panels and structural applications

2011:

Screw machine parts

2017, 2024, 2117:

Mechanical Fasteners

2036:

Automotive body panels, floors, and seating

3000 Series

This major element alloyed to form this series is Manganese. These alloys are not heat treatable and are commonly used for A/C tubing lines. 

3002:

Decorative trim, faceplates, and nameplates.

3003:

Braze-clad welded radiator tubes, heater cores, evaporator fins, A/C and Heater inlet and outlet liquid lines and oil coolers.

3004:

Automotive interior panels and components.

3005:

Radiator , heater and evaporator components.

3102:

Extruded condenser tubes.

5000 Series

This major element alloyed to form this series is Magnesium. These alloys are not heat treatable. Very high strength to weight ratio and is easily welded. Excellent resistance to corrosion and commonly used in marine applications. 

5005:

Decorative trim, faceplates, and nameplates.

5052:

Automotive interior panels, interior components, bumpers, and exterior body parts.

5182:

Automotive interior panels, interior components, bumpers, and exterior body parts.

5454:

Wheels, engine accessory brackets, welded brackets.

5252, 5457,5657:

Trim.

5754:

Inner body panels, splash guards, heat sheilds weldable parts.

6000 Series

This major element alloyed to form this series is Magnesium and Silicon. These alloys are heat treatable. Good formability and corrosion resistance. 

6005, 6105:

Extruded A/C Connectors (peanut fittings and manifold blocks). This alloy contains a higher amount of Silicon compared to 6061.

6009:

Structural and weldable components, seat shells, and bumpers.

6010, 6022:

Outer and inner body panels.

6053:

Mechanical fastners.

6063:

Extruded body components..

6082:

Brake housings.

6061:

Extruded A/C Connectors (peanut fittings and manifold blocks), General extruded components, fuel delivery systems, and forged suspension parts.

6111:

Body panels.

6262:

Screw machined parts, brake pistons.

6463:

Luggage racks.

7000 Series

This major element alloyed to form this series is Zinc. These alloys are heat treatable. Very high strength when combined with percentages of magnesium/copper. 

7003, 7004, 7129:

Seat tracks and bumper reinforcements.

7021:

Bumpers.

7072:

Condenser and radiator fins.

7116:

Headrest bars.
